Jessica Pegula Withdraws From WTA Finals, Daria Kasatkina To Take Her Place
American Tennis Star Jessica Pegula has withdrawn from the WTA Finals due to a hip injury, and she will be replaced by Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina.
Pegula, who qualified for the WTA Finals after a successful season, announced her withdrawal on social media, expressing her disappointment at missing the prestigious event. “I'm so disappointed to announce that I have to withdraw from the WTA Finals due to a lingering hip injury,” Pegula wrote. “I've been dealing with this injury for a few weeks now, and despite receiving treatment and trying to manage the pain, it's not improving enough to allow me to compete at the level I need to.”
Pegula's withdrawal opens the door for Kasatkina, who has had a breakout season in 2022. The Russian player has won two WTA titles this year, including the Granby International, and has reached the semifinals of the French Open and the quarterfinals of the US Open.
The WTA Finals will be held from October 31 to November 7 in Fort Worth, Texas, and features the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world. Pegula's withdrawal is a major blow to the tournament, as she was one of the favorites to win the title. Kasatkina will now have the opportunity to make a deep run in the tournament and potentially claim her first WTA Finals title.
