A Russian regional politician from Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area (KhMAO) will soon be tried for concealing an Italian residence permit. On Wednesday, the court set the date for the commencement of the trial.
According to the Khanty-Mansiysk City Court, the trial is scheduled for August 14, 2023. The investigation determined that the politician failed to inform the election commission about his Italian residence permit.
In Russia, the Electoral Code requires candidates to submit information about their foreign residence permits. This requirement is meant to provide voters with a complete picture of a candidate's ties to other countries.
The deputy, whose name is Alexey Golubev, is accused of violating Part 3 of Article 327 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The article deals with the submission of knowingly false information about income, property, and liabilities to the election commission. If convicted, Golubev faces a fine of up to 300,000 rubles (approximately $5,000) or a term of imprisonment for up to three years.
Golubev's legal team maintains his innocence. On several occasions, Golubev has stated that he did not intentionally conceal his Italian residence permit. However, evidence suggests that he was aware of his obligation to disclose this information.
The investigation leading to the upcoming trial was launched after Golubev was elected deputy of the regional Duma in September 2021. During his election campaign, he did not list his Italian residence permit in his official biography.
This case has drawn attention to the issue of public officials concealing foreign ties. In Russia, there have been growing concerns about the potential influence of foreign powers on domestic politics.
The upcoming trial is expected to set a precedent for future cases involving the concealment of foreign residence permits. The outcome of the trial will also impact public trust in elected officials and the integrity of the electoral process.
