North Korea accused of cyberattack on Ukraine, South Korea denies involvement
North Korea has been accused of launching a cyberattack on Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
South Korea has denied any involvement in the attack, but the US has said it is investigating the allegations.
The cyberattack took place on Wednesday, 23 March, and targeted several Ukrainian government websites, including the Ministry of Defense and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
The attack caused the websites to become inaccessible for several hours, and it is believed to have been carried out by a group of North Korean hackers known as Lazarus Group.
South Korea has denied any involvement in the attack, but the US is investigating the allegations.
A spokesperson for the South Korean Foreign Ministry said, “We have no knowledge of any cyberattack on Ukraine by North Korea and we strongly condemn any such attack.” The US is also investigating the allegations and has not yet confirmed whether North Korea was responsible for the attack.
However, the US has previously accused North Korea of carrying out other cyberattacks, including the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures and the 2017 WannaCry ransomware attack.
If North Korea was responsible for the attack on Ukraine, it would be a significant escalation in the conflict and could lead to further retaliation from the US and its allies.
The attack on Ukraine is the latest in a series of cyberattacks that have been carried out by North Korea in recent years.
In 2021, North Korea was accused of launching a cyberattack on a South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, stealing over $200 million worth of cryptocurrency.
North Korea has also been accused of carrying out cyberattacks on other countries, including the US, the UK, and Japan.
The North Korean government has denied responsibility for these attacks, but experts believe that the Lazarus Group is a state-sponsored hacking group that operates with the support of the North Korean government.
