Hong Kong 'Thriving', Financial Secretary Chan Says
Hong Kong's financial secretary, Paul Chan Mo-po, said on Wednesday that the city's economy is “thriving” despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the global economic slowdown.
Chan made the remarks in a speech delivered at the Hong Kong Economic Summit, where he outlined the city's economic performance in recent months and the government's plans to support growth in the future.
According to Chan, Hong Kong's GDP grew by 7.8% in real terms in the first half of 2022, driven by strong exports and a recovery in domestic demand.
The unemployment rate has also fallen to 4.7%, the lowest level since the global financial crisis.
Chan said that the government will continue to support economic growth by investing in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
He also said that the government will work to attract more foreign investment and talent to the city.
Chan's remarks come at a time when Hong Kong is facing a number of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the global economic slowdown, and the ongoing political unrest in the city.
Despite these challenges, Chan said that he is confident that Hong Kong's economy will continue to grow in the future.
“Hong Kong has a proven track record of resilience and adaptability,” Chan said. “We have overcome many challenges in the past, and we will overcome this one as well.”
