APEC Countries Reaffirm Commitment to Reforming World Trade Organization
Dispute Settlement, Transparency, and Inclusivity on the Agenda
Member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) have reiterated their commitment to reforming the World Trade Organization (WTO) to address current challenges and enhance its effectiveness.
The pledge was made during the recent APEC Ministerial Meeting held virtually. Ministers recognized the need to modernize the WTO's dispute settlement system, enhance transparency, and strengthen its inclusivity.
Dispute Settlement
APEC members emphasized the importance of a fair and efficient dispute settlement mechanism to maintain a rules-based trading system.
They called for resolving the impasse in appointing new members to the WTO's Appellate Body, which has been paralyzed since 2019 due to U.S. objections.
Transparency
APEC ministers recognized the need for greater transparency in WTO negotiations and decision-making processes.
They called for enhancing the availability of information and public participation to increase the legitimacy and accountability of the organization.
Inclusivity
APEC members stressed the importance of ensuring that the WTO remains inclusive and accessible to all economies, particularly developing countries.
They advocated for providing technical assistance and capacity building to help developing countries participate effectively in the multilateral trading system.
The WTO is facing significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise of protectionism, and the need to address emerging issues such as digital trade and climate change.
The APEC members' commitment to reforming the WTO demonstrates their recognition of the organization's importance in maintaining a fair and open global trading system.
The success of the WTO reform process will depend on the willingness of all members to engage in constructive dialogue and find common ground to address the challenges facing the organization.
