Ovechkin makes history with hat-trick against former teammate, closes in on Gretzky's record

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 800th career NHL goal on Tuesday night

In a game against the Chicago Blackhawks, Ovechkin scored a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to lead the Capitals to a 4-3 victory.

The goal was Ovechkin’s 800th in the NHL, making him just the third player in league history to reach that milestone.

Ovechkin's hat-trick was his second of the season and the 29th of his career.

With the goal, Ovechkin moved into sole possession of third place on the NHL’s all-time goals list, passing Jaromir Jagr (766 goals).

Only Wayne Gretzky (894 goals) and Gordie Howe (801 goals) have scored more goals than Ovechkin in NHL history.

Ovechkin is now just 21 goals away from tying Gretzky’s record for most goals scored in an NHL career.

The Capitals captain is on pace to break Gretzky’s record next season.

Ovechkin's hat-trick was a special moment for the Russian superstar.

He scored his first goal against his former teammate, Blackhawks goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

Ovechkin and Fleury played together with the Capitals from 2005 to 2017.

Ovechkin’s second goal was a power-play goal, and his third goal was a game-winning goal in overtime.

The Capitals captain was emotional after the game, saying that it was a “special moment” to score his 800th goal against his former teammate.
