Germany reels from deadly knife attack in Hamburg

Two killed, five injured in suspected terror attack

Security stepped up across the country

BERLIN, Germany – Two people were killed and five others injured in a knife attack in the northern German city of Hamburg on Friday, July 28, in what authorities are treating as a suspected terrorist attack.

The attack took place at around 3:30 p.m. local time in the Barmbek district of Hamburg. The suspect, a 26-year-old man, was arrested at the scene. Police said the suspect was known to authorities and had a history of mental illness. He is believed to have acted alone.

The victims of the attack were a 50-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl. The five injured people were taken to hospital for treatment. One of the injured is in a serious condition.

Police said the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great” in Arabic) during the attack. They are investigating the possibility that the attack was motivated by Islamist extremism.

The attack has been condemned by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who said it was a “cowardly act of terrorism.” He said the government would do everything in its power to bring the perpetrator to justice.

Security has been stepped up across Germany in the wake of the attack. Police have increased their presence in public places and are carrying out random checks on vehicles and people.

The attack is the latest in a series of knife attacks in Germany in recent years. In 2020, a man killed nine people in a knife attack in the city of Würzburg. In 2019, a man killed two people in a knife attack in the city of Dresden.

The attacks have raised concerns about the threat of terrorism in Germany. The country has been on high alert since the 2016 terror attack in Berlin, in which a truck driver killed 12 people.

The German government has taken a number of steps to address the threat of terrorism, including increasing funding for security services and passing new laws to make it easier to prosecute terrorists.
