New Waste Shipments Regulation Aims to Prevent Illegal Waste Trade

Stricter Rules for Exporting Waste to Non-EU Countries

The new Waste Shipments Regulation aims to prevent illegal and environmentally harmful waste shipments to non-EU countries. It establishes stricter rules and control regimes for the export of waste, depending on its origin.

The Regulation has three main goals: ensuring that the EU does not export its waste problems to third countries, easing shipments of waste for reuse and recycling within the EU, and supporting the circular economy.

The Council and the Parliament reached a provisional political agreement on revising the regulation on waste shipments in June 2022. The new Regulation will enter into force in July 2023.
