Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • sc = single crochet

Instructions:

  1. Row 1: Ch55, counts as 1st hdc, and ch1 skip. (55 hdc)
  2. Row 2: (hdc in next hdc, ch1) 27 times. (28 groups of hdc and ch1)
  3. Row 3: *Sc in next ch1 space, hdc in next hdc* repeat * around. (55 sc and 28 hdc)
  4. Row 4: *Sc in next hdc, hdc in next sc* repeat * around. (55 hdc and 28 sc)
  5. Row 5-20: Repeat Rows 3 and 4.
  6. Row 21: (sc in next hdc, ch3, sc in next hdc) 28 times. (28 groups of sc and ch3)
  7. Row 22: Sc in each sc and ch3 space around. (84 sc)
  8. Decrease Rounds:
    • Round 1: *Sc in each of the next 12 sc, sc2tog* repeat * around. (72 sc)
    • Round 2: *Sc in each of the next 11 sc, sc2tog* repeat * around. (60 sc)
    • Round 3: *Sc in each of the next 10 sc, sc2tog* repeat * around. (48 sc)
    • Round 4: *Sc in each of the next 9 sc, sc2tog* repeat * around. (36 sc)
    • Round 5: *Sc in each of the next 8 sc, sc2tog* repeat * around. (24 sc)
    • Round 6: *Sc in each of the next 7 sc, sc2tog* repeat * around. (18 sc)

  9. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining loops and pull tight to close the hat.

Finishing:

Pompom (optional): To make a pompom, wrap yarn around two fingers several times. Remove the yarn from your fingers and tie a piece of yarn tightly around the center of the loops. Trim the loops to create a ball.

  • For a tighter fit, use a smaller hook or fewer stitches per row.
  • If you don't have super chunky yarn, you can use two strands of regular chunky yarn held together.
