Could You Survive the Viking Invasion of Wessex?

By Alice Loxton

Science and History Collide in New Book

In their new book, 'How to Survive…', Alice Loxton, Luke Tomes, and Louee Dessent use hindsight and modern science to estimate how to survive some of history's most deadly events. From how fast you'd need to run to outpace a hungry lion to how to avoid being crushed by a collapsing building, this book has everything you need to know to survive the unthinkable.

In one chapter, the authors take on the Viking invasion of Wessex. Using historical accounts and archaeological evidence, they piece together a detailed picture of what life was like in England during this turbulent time. They then use their scientific knowledge to estimate how likely it would be for an average person to survive a Viking raid.

The results are surprising. While the Vikings were undoubtedly fearsome warriors, the authors find that it was вполне possible for an ordinary person to survive their invasion. By following a few simple rules, such as staying indoors during raids and avoiding contact with the Vikings, it was possible to ride out the storm and live to tell the tale.

Of course, there were no guarantees. The Vikings were a brutal and unpredictable force, and even the most careful person could fall victim to their violence. But by understanding the risks and taking precautions, it was possible to increase your chances of survival.

So, could you survive the Viking invasion of Wessex? Read 'How to Survive…' and find out!
