Public Health Officials Investigating Potential Cases

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) passengers may have been exposed to a person infected with measles last week. Public health officials are urging anyone who was at LAX between July 28th and July 31st to be aware of the potential exposure and to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.

The infected individual traveled from London to Los Angeles on July 28th and was contagious at the time of travel. Health officials believe that anyone who was in close contact with the individual during that time may have been exposed.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause fever, rash, and respiratory complications. It is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The incubation period for measles is typically 10-12 days.

Symptoms of measles can include:

• Fever
• Rash
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Watery eyes
• Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
• Muscle aches
• Tiredness

Health officials are advising anyone who may have been exposed to measles to monitor themselves for symptoms for 21 days after the potential exposure. If symptoms develop, they should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Vaccination against measles is the best way to prevent infection. The measles vaccine is safe and effective and is typically given in two doses, at 12-15 months and 4-6 years of age.
